Abstract:

The recent coronavirus (COVID-19) is a rapidly spreading multisystemic disease with a broad spectrum of cutaneous manifestations. Recently, DNA-based/RNA-based vaccines, inactivated vaccines, and non-replicating viral vector vaccines have been manufactured to reduce viral transmission and attenuate the morbidity and mortality of COVID-19. The neurotropic virus of varicella-Zoster can reactivate spontaneously or in response to a trigger such as trauma, fever, or immunosuppression. Recently, COVID-19 infection was assumed as a potential trigger as well. Up to now, 91 cases of Herpes Zoster have been reported after COVID-19 vaccinations. The present study reported a case of a 69-year-old woman from Iran. She had received an Astra Zeneca COVID-19 vaccine 5 days before the skin eruption. A clinical diagnosis of Herpes Zoster infection was confirmed by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for varicella Zoster DNA. Oral acyclovir 800 mg five times a day together with gabapentin 300 mg every night resulted in the resolution of the lesions in 2 weeks with no sequelae. The present study then discussed the potential contribution of vaccination against COVID-19 and the reactivation of the varicella-Zoster virus.

Abstract:

The reactivated form of the varicella-Zoster virus (VZV) is responsible for chickenpox, known as Herpes Zoster (HZ). Although it is a self-limiting infection, it presents debilitating and painful mucosal and dermal vesicular eruptions. Early identification and management are vital to curbing the spread of HZ infection. In this extensive review, we present an overview of HZ, including its structure, pathophysiology, clinical presentation, complications, investigations, and management. Our review also highlights the prophylaxis and treatment of complications manifested by the VZV.

Abstract:

Background: Herpes Zoster (HZ) is the reactivation of latent varicella-Zoster virus due to such risk factors as aging and immunosupression. Diabetes Mellitus (DM) causes immunosupression and can activate HZ. This study focuses on the relationship between Herpes Zoster and Diabetes Mellitus.Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study 103 patients referred to the dermatology and infectious disease clinics with HZ (cases) and 142 with other diseases (control) were enrolled to the study. They had no history of DM. Both groups were matched for age, gender and family history of DM. FBS was checked for all participants and FBS ³126mg/dl was defined as DM.Results: 35.9% of patients with HZ and 19.7% of control group had DM. There was a significant relationship between HZ and undiagnosed DM (OR=2.28, 95% CI: 1.28-4.06, p=0.0046). On the other hand, DM was 2.28 times more common in HZ patients than in normal population. Conclusion: Undiagnosed DM can cause HZ so the patients suffering from HZ but have no history of DM should be monitored for diabetes.

Abstract:

Herpes Zoster (Zona) is due to the reactivation of VZV in one dermatome. The disease begins with pain and burning in dermatome. After 48-72 hours maculopapular rashes appear that rapidly change to vesicular form. Incidence increases with aging. Some risk factors especially immunosuppression increase disease the aim of this study is evaluation of epidemiology and risk factors of Zona in Semnan. In this study 104 Herpes Zoster patient evaluated based on clinical diagnosis. Information about age, sex, season, dermatome and risk factors registered.51.9% patients were male and 48.1% were female. Mean age of patients was 53 year and 65.4% were above 50 years old. The more common dermatomes in order of frequency were thoracic, trigeminal, cervical and lumbar. 74.1% of patients have no underlying problems, 11.5% have Diabetes mellitus, 7.7% Steroid consumption and 2.9% malignancy.Distributions of Zona based on sex, gender and dermatome was, like others studies.Season maybe have role in Zona distribution. Because a proportion of patients had Diabetes mellitus, suggest patients with zona evaluated for probability of diabetes mellitus.

Abstract:

Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) causes two distinct clinical entities, varicella that is an acute and generally benign illness in children resulting from primary infection with VZV, and Zoster which results from reactivation of latent VZV and usually occurs in adults. Zoster is uncommon before 10 years of age. Occurrence of Herpes Zoster during varicella infection is exceptional. Here, I report an unusual and rare case of Herpes Zoster that occurred during varicella in a healthy 10-year-old child.
